This release was cut from a practice session for a live set which I performed in 2018. It's the product of obsessive love for a particular zone of early NY/NJ deep house: the rough and raw productions of Mateo & Matos on Final Cut, the Burrell brothers on Nu Groove, and Roger S on Strictly Rhythm from 1990-91. Chalk the long arrangements and piano prevalence up to me listening to a lot of DJ Sprinkles at the time too.

There's no substitute for the depth and melancholy of this short period and the mindblowing contradictions of the production. These records overwhelm with heavy emotional atmospheres, while in some ways sounding soft and delicate compared to current productions. The instruments should be familiar, since it's mostly samples and digital versions of drum kits, flutes, organs, pianos and basses, but instead they sound alien and distant, texturally warped into an uncharted world by samplers, D/A conversion and vinyl mastering.

I can't say I achieved all of the above, but I think about this set often and five years later it still feels worth presenting. The set was created & performed on the MPC1000, using drum samples and piano from the Boss DR-5, instruments from the Roland D-110, synth moments & keyboard input from the Korg Minilogue, and a few additional vocal and break samples mostly recorded from a popular video streaming platform.

The aim was to recreate some of the texture, vibe and technique in a portable & performable way, with a few contemporary additions and enough variety to hold an audience for an hour-long set. The biggest departure from these influences is closing track "The Question", which is a live adaptation of a track that has yet to be released, which is based more on my experiences with meditation and self-reflection than any of the above. Since the original isn't out yet, I've decided to reserve that track as a bonus for folks making the full album commitment. As always I'm grateful for your support!
